What Is Sowilo?
Sowilo is a rune of the Elder Futhark whose literal meaning is “sun.” It belongs to the second aett (group of eight runes), associated in some traditions with the figures Heimdall and Mordgud, and carries the phonetic value “S.” Alternate names for the same rune appear across different sources and dialects, including Sowelu, Sigel, Sugil, and Sig — variations that reflect the rune’s use across different regions and time periods rather than separate symbols.
Sowilo’s Core Meaning: The Sun, Victory, and Vitality
Sowilo is tied to the element of fire and is generally associated with energy, vitality, achievement, and good fortune. Because the sun was understood across many ancient cultures as the force that makes life possible, Sowilo tends to carry an inherently positive charge in traditional interpretation — success, illumination, clarity, and forward motion after a period of difficulty or stagnation. It’s commonly read as a sign that effort already invested is beginning to pay off, much like how sunlight causes planted seeds to sprout.
Mythological Background: Sol, the Sun Chariot, and the Wolf
In Norse mythology, the sun is personified as the goddess Sól, who drives a chariot pulled across the sky, perpetually pursued by a wolf that is destined to catch and devour her on the day of Ragnarök. This myth frames the sun’s light and warmth as something powerful but not permanent or guaranteed — a reminder, in some interpretations, that Sowilo’s energy should be used with intention and care rather than taken for granted. Some traditions also note that two Sowilo runes placed on top of each other form a shape resembling a rotating sun wheel, a motif that appears independently across a number of cultures as a solar symbol.
Can Sowilo Be Reversed?
No — Sowilo is one of the small number of Elder Futhark runes traditionally read the same way regardless of orientation, meaning it has no separate reversed (merkstave) meaning. This is generally attributed to the rune’s symmetrical, zigzag shape, which doesn’t visually change in a way that would suggest a distinct inverted reading, unlike runes with more directional shapes. In practice, this means that however Sowilo falls in a reading, it’s interpreted using its single upright meaning.
Sowilo in Modern Rune Divination
When Sowilo appears in a reading, it’s typically interpreted as a strongly favorable sign — pointing to success, renewed motivation, healing, or a surge of positive energy in whatever area the reading concerns, including relationships, health, or personal goals. In matters of love specifically, Sowilo is often read as indicating a warm, energized period in a relationship, or the resolution of past tension. As with all divinatory practices, these readings are a traditional, reflective framework rather than a guaranteed prediction, and are best treated as prompts for self-reflection.
Is Sowilo the Most Powerful Norse Symbol?
There’s no single, universally agreed-upon “most powerful” symbol in Norse tradition — the label tends to shift depending on who’s asked and what kind of power is meant. Alongside Sowilo, commonly cited contenders include the Valknut (associated with Odin and fate), Mjölnir (Thor’s hammer, associated with protection and strength), the Vegvisir (a protective wayfinding symbol), and Yggdrasil (the world tree, representing the interconnectedness of all existence). Sowilo’s particular strength, by most accounts, lies specifically in solar energy, victory, and vitality rather than a general claim to being the single most powerful symbol overall.
